I’m sure every kid who grew up in the Gorge has fantasized about owning the little island just outside of Mosier. It’s the only privately owned island in the Columbia River and was listed for $1.4 mil when it was last for sale in 2007.

In high school, it was rumored that it was owned by Tom Selleck.

And a older guy in the coffee shop just told me he thought it was once owned by Burt Reynolds.

Wonder who the current rumor is? Justin Timberlake? Zac Efron? No. Clearly whoever it is, they need to have a mustache.

Here’s another yet unsubstantiated rumor: Walt Disney spent a winter in Mosier, working at one of the sawmills. They say his little house was cold and miserable and inhabited by mice.

The inspiration, they say, for Mickey and a move to California warmth.

Apparently you can look up his postoffice box in the public records if you had the inclination.

There’s an old highway between Mosier and Hood River that’s been turned into a hiking & biking trail. And on this old road are a pair of tunnels that have been carved out of the rock of the hillside. They’re pretty impressive. Stone arches that look out onto the river. Dark and sturdy after all these years.

And on the wall on one end, is an old note carved into a rock. A bit of old fashioned graffiti, if you will. It reads:

It’s not official -I’ll say that right now. But there’s a thought swirling around town that it could very well be true. Between the 5 at the Good River restaurant, the 16 at the Thirsty Woman, and the 2 at 10 Speed…that’s .053 taps per person. And not a Budwiser among them.
